What is Bael fruit and its benefits?

Beal is a type of wood apple that goes by many names; Bilva in Sanskrit, Bilva Pazham in Tamil, Bilva or Maredu Phalam in Teluga, and Bengal Quince native to India, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and South-East Asia. Its scientific name is Aegle marmelos.

The Bael fruits are slightly round with a hard exterior that stays hard even when the fruit ripens. The fruit is greenish gray and turns yellow upon ripening and consists of pulp in which seeds are filled in with natural adhesive.

There are many beneficial properties of Bael:

  • It is used to lower diabetes, as it reduces blood sugar levels and hemoglobin-bound sugar levels. It also slightly increases insulin levels.
  • Reduces swelling, pain, and fever as it inhibits the activation of histamine receptors which is responsible for inflammation and symptoms of allergy and asthma.
  • Consists of the potential to interfere with the growth of cancer cells. This is done by consuming the leaf extract of Bael.
  • Destroys parasites that cause malaria thanks to its seeds.
  • Helps reduce thyroid hormone levels which prevents hypothyroidism
  • It consists of an antioxidant property due to bioactive compounds (such as tannins, flavonoids, etc.) that help reduce oxidative stress and radicals in the body.
